Their average age is 20, but they are governed by octogenarians. 32 years in power characterized by joblessness, violence, repression and corruption that has finally crushed the strength and commitment of the youth. It now stands beside and powerlessly, amorphously and nearly asleep like zombies watches its execution on the altar of profit and the thirst of power by a rapacious and greedy elite.

Valsero was born within that context and would later be nicknamed GENERAL VALSERO by the youth: young, engaged, revolutionary, with a courage that at time borders recklessness, but first and foremost an artist. His first album POLITIQUEMENT INSTABLE (politically unstable) has shaken Cameroon, his incisive lyrics, his stands and his impact on the youth have finally made him the mouthpiece of a youth that had hitherto lacked orientation and role models. He therefore became a pain in the neck of the repressive regime in Yaounde that has not only used censorship to combat him. Throughout his career, he has also experienced arrest and exclusion.

An overview of the chaotic path of a commited artist living under a dictorial regime.

Valsero

pour la version française voir ci-dessous

VALSERO defines himself as a political rapper. He, attacks, challenges and lambasts the dictatorial management of President PAUL BIYA who has been in power for 32 years. His songs including CE PAYS TUE LES JEUNES (this country kills the youth) , NE ME PARLEZ PLUS DE CE PAYS (don’t mention this country to me again) or the famous LETTRE AU PRESIDENT (letter to the president) have unleashed a storm of harassment on him by the Biya regime, but also the love and respect from the Cameroonian people. VALSERO has been arrested many times and many of his concerts were forbidden. Nevertheless, the album was extremely successful.

He begins singing rap tunes in 1990 and forms his first rap band ULTIMATUM, but it is only in 2008 that he produces his first solo album POLITIQUEMENT INSTABLE (politically unstable). The success is unexpected, then the Cameroonian youth has just found a new leader that resembles them: young, strong, courageous, charismatic. He was back again in 2009 with the single REPOND (answer!) still directed towards Paul Biya. In 2010 he published his second Album AUTOPSIE d’un crime d’état (autopsy of a state crime) and in 2011 “l’appel du peuple “ (the people’s call).

VALSERO has also launched a huge campaign to mobilize and sensitize the youth through his association JEUNE ET FORT (young and strong) which advocates education to the values of citizenship, democracy and electoral culture. He launched the campaign «va voter» (go and vote) in 2007 which became «Je vote, donc j’existe» (I vote, so I exist) in 2011. In 2012 and 2013 he got involved in the fight against AIDS through the campaign «Je l’ai fait et toi…?» (I did it, and you… ?) targeting the schooling population. He has been on stage and sung together with many celebrities including: Manu Dibango, Fally Ipoupa, Alpha Blondy, Tiken Jah Fakoly as well as French rappers like: La fouine, Soprano and Kery James.

Valsero has also made a stint into cinema. He acted himself in the movie LE PRESIDENT (the president) by Jean Pierre Bekolo and has just finished a documentary film entitled DU PIMENT SUR LES LEVRES (hot pepper on the lips).

His next album INTENSITE (intensity) will be published at the end of 2015, followed by a live hip-hop and jazz album recorded with a group of German-Cameroonian musicians called SEVEN HILLS.

VALSERO, whose real name is Gaston Philippe Abe Abe, was born on September 12, 1975 in Marseille, France. After a “normal” youth under the concrete buildings of the Old Harbor, Valsero arrives in Cameroon in 1987 and settles with his father in Yaoundé, the capital city.
