About Reclaim the Beats 2017

The spirit of sound is ancient and precious. The plight of music genres are parallel to historic indigenous societies who’s glorious treasures were plundered by foreign conquerors. Colonization, supremacy and capitalism have continued to capture and use our cultures to it’s awe, entertainment and profit. Reclaim the Beats Festival 2017 performs a restoration for precious gems created by people of color and queers in music.

Reclaim the Beats is a festival with a focus on music genres created by black, POC and queer people that have been heavily gentrified in media over several years. These genres are House, Techno, Rock & HipHop. Spanning over 2 weeks with series of more than 5 events including concert, dance parties, workshops and panels. The 2nd edition in October 2017 will continue to pay tribute and to highlight modern artists in music genres that were started by people of color and queer talents.

  RENU

Bengali-British queer femme musician RENU is a BRLN and LNDN based artist, composer, producer, tabla-player, multi-percussionist. A multi-everything. Originally a Percussionist she played for multiple bands & genres – Grace Jones, State of Bengal, Fun_da_mental, Kevin Davy Jazz D’semble, MIKA, Alabama 3, Tunde Jegede – she started to produce her own music in the year of 2010. Fast forward some years, learning from percussion Masters in India, Brazil and Cuba, composing for theatre, film & dance, working for contemporary dance schools, hosting her own nights in London, 1 EP and 3 albums later, she has now landed in an electronic realm. THEY DANCE IN THE DARK is RENU’s personal imprint as a weird queer femme, in a weird queer world.

They dance in the dark the album – the show

What would you do if you discovered a party where Gary Numan is married to The Orb who is slow dancing with Massive Attack, while Oum Kalthoum French kisses Prince and finally, Daphne Oram is mixing the drinks? THEY DANCE IN THE DARK is a mystical electronic space odyssey with live music, ableton and percussion, live visuals and different dance and drag performances.

RENU’s electronic music production largely references 80s and 90s Electronic dance music and combines the height of dark hooky anthems with an underlying post-colonial narrative. THEY DANCE IN THE DARK is dedicated to all the witches, weirdos, nerds, femmes and queers of this cosmos.

LNDN based filmmaker, visual artist YUE WANG live visuals for THEY DANCE IN THE DARK are created in collaboration with RENU for the album and the show. The visuals reflect the albums queer, weird and femme spirit in a setting of a mystical electronic odyssey.
