creole Award

World music award creole

creole stands for the only World Music Contest in Germany and its three World Music Awards, each of which includes a cash prize of 2,000€!

The creole Award is the competition for global sounds! As Germany's only World Music Competition, creole presents talented musicians, bands and ensembles that provide the soundtrack for a pluralistic society influenced by migration and transculturality using new musical languages.

The creole Award provides a stage for this ever-expanding musical diversity, where - in addition to artistic quality - originality and distinctiveness are of great importance:

BalkanSka and Afro-Pop, Kora underlaid with BeatBox, New Anatolian Traditionals from X-Berg, Cumbia Crossover, Chinese Traditionals fused with German poetry, Persian Jazz made in Berlin, Brazil Progressive Rock, Roots Reggae in Yoruba and German ...

It is about distinctive musical diversity, fusions resulting from migration and transculturality and the coolest musical developments of the 21st century - and last but not least, of course, it is also about the exciting multiple day music contest bringing together the best Global Beat bands of the Republic on one stage!

creole was launched in 2006 and has been taking places every two years in eight different regions, parallel, alternatively or consecutively. Around 400 bands have since participated in various creole competitions.

2015 marked the 5th creole NRW and from 19 to 22nd November 2015, the 5th creole Berlin Brandenburg will be taking place in Berlin.

For the first time ever, the World Music Award "creole global" international will soon be launched where participants will compete to win one of three 2,000 EUR cash prizes. creole global is open to band applications from all around the world!

the 5th creole Berlin Brandenburg

18 Bands, all of whom are gems of this region's Global Music Scene, played
from Thursday, 19 November to Sunday, 22 November 2015
in the contest creole at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN.

In twenty-minute concerts, the bands displayed a wide variety of genres, unexpected style interpretations and fusions never heard before. You guessed it: This is the authentic soundtrack of the urban metropolis - a Berlin shaped by migration and transculturality!

Next to tried and true world music classics such as Groove Tango, Balkan Folk and Broken Bossa, global beat enthusiasts were enchanted by the softer sounds of Iraqi Maqam Music, the romance of singer-songwriter ballads in Lingala and the sound of Dada Farsi - Drum 'n Folk. For those keen on taking it to the floor, creole offered rare interpretations of bassy dance beats from the universe of Detroit Techno; Afro-Tech-Funk or Cumbia, Merengue and Salsa sounds; and Roots Reggae in Yoruba!

18 Global Beat Bands to Partake in Finale of 5th creole Berlin & Brandenburg

As expected, all 58 bands applying for this year's Global Beat Contest creole represent the utmost in musical quality. Accordingly, the jury deliberated into the evening hours after its musical marathon through the Berlin World Music scene; from Balkan Ska, Afro Pop, Beatbox and New Anatolian Traditionals to Cumbia Crossover and Siberian Ethno Sound, all the way to Egyptian Chamber Jazz and Electronica Columbia Funk.

"It is quite striking this year that considerably more ensembles are incorporating Jazz elements and electro-acoustic sounds into their compositions," says creole Project Manager Anette Heit.

The three-member jury selected 18 bands to compete in the live competition of the 5th creole Berlin & Brandenburg from 20 - 22 November 2015 at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN: musicians who based within the broad range of 'popular music' and whose music is relevant to one or multiple regional and/or diasporic musical cultures.

All 18 bands will be playing live at the 5th creole Berlin Brandenburg from 19 - 22 November 2015 in the concert competitions at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN:

  • Peer Steinwald – A&R-Manager Budde Music
  • Annett Scheffel – Freelance Arts & Culture Journalist (u.a. Süddeutsche Zeitung, Musikexpress, Business Punk, Berliner Zeitung)
