In Memoriam

Thursday, August 15, 2013 - Commemoration of the 1st Anniversary of Abdourahmane Gilbert Diop's Passing

Family members will be holding a reception from 4:30 PM in the foyer of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN. A Quran reading will be held, and band colleagues from various stages of Gilbert's life will pay homage to the Godfather of Berlin's Global Music Scene.

The Doyen of the African music scene in Berlin, Abdourahmane Gilbert Diop, was born into one of the most important Griot families in Senegal and as a young man was witness to the independence movements on the African continent. For over 25 years, he had lived in Europe and worked as a Griot, singer, actor, composer, percussionist and band leader. Whilst working as a composer and musician for the Schaubühne, Theater des Westens and the Komische Oper in Berlin, he also performed concerts in France, Switzerland, Italy and the USA.

Abdourahmane Gilbert Diop explored and fused the urban rhythms of Europe with Funk, Jazz, Afro-Beat, Salsa and, of course, the Senegalese M'balax. In October 2006, he won the Ella audience award at the JAZZ AWARD BERLIN Festival, and in June 2007, he was awarded the 'Europäischen Förderpreis für Musik und Friedenskultur' (en. 'European Prize for Music and Culture of Peace').

On August 17, 2012 at 5 PM, in great mourning, we paid our last respects to a grand artist and a dear friend and colleague in the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN, where he had given a magnificent performance two months prior at the opening of the NÄCHTE DES RAMADAN. The ceremony was followed by a concert by the musical collective 1884, with whom Abdourahmane Gilbert Diop was supposed to play.

May your Soul rest in Peace, Gilbert.
