Every year, Berlin partakes in the great cultural celebration of Ramadan. With concerts, films, shadow puppet theater and discussions, the program NÄCHTE DES RAMADAN invites you take a look into the past and present of the myriad of unique cultures which have been influenced by Islam: from Egypt to Turkey, Jordan to Senegal and Algeria to Iran.

For the NÄCHTE DES RAMADAN, sixteen relevant concerts and films have been selected by our curators of WorldWideMusic and WorldWideCinema. Additionally, the photography exhibition 'Oman in Pictures', in co-operation with the Embassy of Oman, will be displayed.

From July 20 - August 18, 2012, extraordinary artists take the stage at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN to present their countries' cultures - from past traditions to present-day cross-genre experimentations. Marking the musical onset of the program, Abdourahmane G. Diop, the Godfather of Berlin's Global Music scene, will perform by employing age-old Griot traditions. Nasser Kilada's latest project Ranin combines Egyptian and coptic melodies with western styles.

One of the films being shown, the psychodrama Takva - A Man's Fear of God, co-produced by Fatih Akin, deals with the fine distinction between cultural and religious identity. In Fasten auf Italienisch, the 'fake-Italian' Dino is forced by his ailing father to observe Ramadan, an act which threatens to expose his Arab identity.
