No to the abolition of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN

In June 2017, the Berlin Senate suddenly and without warning cancelled the user contract for the former brewery building in Wissmannstrasse that it concluded with the “Brauerei Wissmannstrasse e.V. – WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN” organisation in 1994, to take effect from the 31st of December 2017!

For the last two decades, the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN has been a place for presentation, representation and encounter for many Berliners with close biographical connections to the various regions and cultures of the world – and thereby also to the various cultural milieus of the city.

As a platform for art, culture and action, the unique cultural institution produces around 450 guest, cooperative and in-house productions annually, that focus on current cultural and migration policy developments using film, concert, performance and spoken word events – especially taking into account the work of People of Colour, black people, those belonging to cultural minorities and other marginalized groups.

Why the Senate now, of all times, wants to abolish this unique multidisciplinary institution for migrant and postcolonial art, culture and action when there is growing right-wing populism, is completely incomprehensible!

We say “NO to the abolition of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN!”
