2017 Preview

Our theme for 2017 is LA SAISON ARABE – with Fadfadah workshops, an Arab song jam, the Beyond Spring film series, guest performances by an Arab theatre ensemble and Raqs nights, talks, workshops and more...

We open 2017 with an unmistakable bang on the 20th of January, with our 2nd GLOBAL DRUMS FESTIVAL. Over three fully packed festival days we'll display a representative section of Berlin's international and transcultural drum scene – focusing on percussive music from the Middle East.

In February, it's time for BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2017. This year, we'll be dedicating ourselves to the various resistance narratives that accompany German colonialism from 1884 to 1914, as well as the still-powerful consequences of European colonial politics on today's decisions regarding migration policies in the Schengen area.

Under the direction of the singer, percussionist and oud player Nasser Kilada, our EU project ARAB SONG JAM begins in March. This is a monthly concert series where musicians who have fled their homes bring popular Arab songs to the stage, with new jazz interpretations of them, on the first Thursday of the month.

In addition, we'll be celebrating ROM*NJA HISTORY MONTH from the 8th of March to the 8th of April, with various partners from the Roma and Sinti communities in Berlin!

From the 1st Sunday in May to the last Sunday in July: JAZZ, JAM & FOOD is back! Sundays, always from 4pm, Eric "Naked Jazz" Vaughn, the most charming drummer in Berlin, together with the barbecue expert Gershwin from Amandla! Braai, serve up the best jam session and the most delicious South African BBQ in town – when it's sunny under the copper beech tree in the luscious WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN garden, and if it rains in the cosy WDK café.

In August, it's finally time for creole again! For the 6th time now, and we are already looking for the most exciting, innovating and yes, "best" fusion bands that the region has to offer this summer, for this unique live World Beat Battle – and this time: it's an outdoor event!

In October, we'll be celebrating music and dance once more, at our SACRED MUSIC & DANCE FESTIVAL, an integral feature of the religious activities of various religious communities in Berlin.

With the 2nd creole MUSIK.FILM.FEST and the 2nd WDK SHORT FILM AWARD, November's focus is on art house films. We are looking forward to the premiere of music films from South-East Asia and short films submitted from Berlin and Brandenburg.

After the first fantastic edition of SHTETL NEUKOELLN, this year we are also planning a Yiddish culture and Klezmer festival in December 2017 to conclude the year with dancing and singing!

We are looking forward to welcoming you to these, and perhaps some of the other around 400 events that will take place at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN in 2017!
