Part II: Capital in Greece

Jorgos Metaxas and Lefteris Arabatzis discuss the role of Greek capital.

Host: Ozeni Athanasiadou

This event will be held in German.

Greece is at a crossroads. The country is being criticized of not wanting to carry out necessary reforms. The European negotiators, especially the German Government, would like to make additional aid payments to Greece dependent on the extent to which the country implements the requested measures. But what lies behind this oft-quoted "Reform List" continues to remain in the dark. At the same time, the resentment and distrust of the European institutions continues to rise in Greece. The Greeks look at the required mass layoffs, the elimination of workers' rights, further pension cuts and the privatization of key state-owned enterprises with fear - measures which the European Left has long been criticizing as neoliberalism. The question remains unclear as to what the patient Greece is actually suffering from; a question that should have been asked long before the official start of the crisis. However, the political will was lacking not only Greece, but also on an international level.

The WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN and the Hellenische Gemeinde zu Berlin will be dealing with these issues in three events in June 2015. In lectures and discussions, the crisis in Greece will be examined from its genesis. In addition to economic aspects, the political, cultural and social aspects will be looked at, which in their entirety have led the country into the abyss. The central focus is the question of what specific markedness the global crisis in Greece has had.

Ozeni Athanasiadou is a lawyer based in Berlin. She freelances for the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, where she leads classes on the subject of capital. She also leads workshops on Das Kapital and Marxist legal theory.
