Oana Cătălina Chitu & Dejan Jovanovic

Bucharest Tango

Fluctuating and often bitter is the history of the Balkans amongst the major powers of Europe and Asia Minor. Here, a cultural amalgamation has formed over centuries, whose music is characterized by rich harmonies and lively rhythms and draws from many sources. Musicians from Sinte_zza and Rrom_nja communities, especially, have adopted, preserved and developed these different elements.

Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu (vocals) and Dejan Jovanovic (accordion) grew up with this tradition. Their repertoire includes songs from the Sinte_zza and Rrom_nja communities and the Balkans as well as the sophisticated Tango music from 1930s Bucharest.

Together, they have re-arranged the traditional songs and mix together forms of Jazz and experimental music in their interpretations. The melancholic tangos and songs performed by Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu come from the repertoire of the great Maria Tanase. Her warm and sonorous voice does justice to Tango and stars of the times; the arrangements are original and yet remain in touch with tradition. while the arrangements are innovative, yet connected by the sound of tradition. No other singer of the younger generation from Romania has been able to approach the Tango à la Romanesque so authentically and yet so freely.

Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu studied Jazz singing and classical singing. Dejan Jovanovic studied accordion and piano.
