Funky Afrobeat from Berlin

Tiliboo” means sunset in Mandingo. Originating from different parts of the world, the musicians express African songs in a whole new way. Their repertoire ranges from Afro-Cuban salsa to the trance-like rhythms of Casamance, from Fela-Kuti inspired Afrobeat to Griot-Mandinka pieces. Bandleader and singer Omar Diop expresses his love of music in each style and thrills both the audience as well as his band.

Omar Diop is the leader of the Berlin-based Afrobeat project Tiliboo Afrobeat. Omar comes from the Casamance region of southern Senegal, a heartland where the West African Mandinka culture lives on. After his arrival in Berlin in 1997, Omar founded Lion Express, the predecessor to the band that is now called Tiliboo. Omar’s congas create the fundamental structure that emphasise the folklore aspects of the project.

Together with American Conor McNally on keyboards, Nick Morrison (Charity Children/Polyversal Souls) on guitars and French saxophonist Felix Gibaud, Tiliboo has succeeded in fully cultivating Omar’s Afro-Jazz potential. Alongside German bassist Charlie Birkenhauer (Echtzeit) and drummer Sebastian Maschat (The Whitest Boy Alive), the band moves effortlessly from Afro-Cuban salsa to the trance-like Casamance rhythms or from Fela-Kuti style Afrobeat to the traditional Mandinka Grito repertoire. As a child, Omar absorbed the rhythms and songs of the various Mandinka, Wolof and Jola cultures of the Casamance region, including Serouba music with the Bougarabou drum. At 15 he was already a professional performer for dance groups from the region, but that was just the beginning of his musical journey. In 1992 Omar came to Europe to give percussion workshops. He quickly found work as a musician, playing African and European jazz on stages throughout Europe. During this time he developed his own unique style of Afrobeat, mixing jazz and other international styles with the traditional rhythms and melodies of Casamance.
