Rumeli Türküleri

The Meral Cihan Ensemble presents Rumeli* songs at this year’s World Wide Music concert series. Rumeli songs (also called Balkan songs) are an important element of classical Turkish music. Like Istanbul songs, they are mostly anonymous, yet they are closer to classical Turkish music than Istanbul songs which stem exclusively from Istanbul’s population. There are countless compositions in every melody type (makam): Hicaz, Uşşak, Hüzzam and Saba. Rumeli songs were strongly influenced by many different ethnic groups.
Though most of these songs tempt the audience to get up and dance, the lyrics are full of melancholy and some are often stirring enough to make one weep. They are the stories of those people who wait longingly for their beloved, of a young woman who claims to be the apple of her mother’s eye. On this evening, the Meral Cihan Ensemble will present the most popular of these songs.
