Shtetl Neukölln: Klezmer Festival from 7th to 11th december

Klezmer in Neukölln? Yes. And right here.

That’s because Jewish life has come back to Berlin and with it many young, international Klezmer musicians who have established themselves in the cultural scene. Many of them have also made Neukölln their home and focal point. In addition to the regular Neukölln Klezmer Sessions and the Klezmerball Tantshoys Neukölln, the “Shtetl Neukölln” festival is premiering in 2016. The festival doesn’t highlight an historical, formalistic understanding of traditional Yiddish dance music – instead it wishes to present the openness and integration potential this music has now.

That’s why, in addition to concerts, sessions and a Klezmer ball, the programme includes a wide range of workshops on the topics of Klezmer dance, Yiddish songs and instrumentals. What’s more, the multimedia project celebrating the 140th birthday of the Yiddish poet and songwriter Mordechaj Gebirtig will be presented during the festival.

FORSHPIL is a cutting-edge, young Latvian duo with a unique take on traditional Yiddish music. Inspired by world music, rock and jazz, FORSHPIL has invented a new sound for Yiddish love songs, Hassidic nigunim and klezmer melodies. At times intense and driving, then intimate and lyrical, the duo’s jazzy, cool approach taps a deep and hidden vein of Jewish soul music.

Sasha Lurje - voice
Ilya Shneyveys - keyboards

The Semer label, founded by Hirsh Lewin, existed in Berlin from 1932-38, producing a treasure trove of recordings of Jewish music at the very time that the Nazis were preparing to destroy Jewish life. For many of us, it is impossible to listen to the recordings on the Semer label without an underlying sense of tragedy.

Directed by Alan Bern, the band aimes to recapture the original spirit and sound of the chosen recordings as closely as possible. The non-purist approach is inspired by the Semer label itself. The program is therefore an homage to the label and its artists, not only to preserve their memory but also to celebrate and continue what they stood for in life.
