"Black Tides"

Original English-language texts read by Maroula Blades
German translations read by Djeneba Schick and Leonard Peters
Vocals by Larry Jordan
Slide art by Peter Blau
Music composed by George Henry and Maroula Blades

The Afro-British writer Maroula Blades has already enjoyed much success at international literature festivals and readings with her English-language poetry performances (with German translations), on stages in and outside of Berlin, for many years.
Maroula Blades’ melodic and profound poems whisk the listener away on a journey that awakens all the senses. Through this unique fusing of poetry, music, film and art, the audience experiences a reading that remains an unforgettable event.

The reading will be accompanied by the musical compositions of George Henry and Maroula Blades, as well as slide art from Peter Blau, that have been specially composed/painted for each poem, as well as film works.

Press review:
“The distinctive poet and singer Maroula Blades... presented an atmospheric complete work on the stage, consisting of poems, images and a musical soundscape…”
Süddeutsche Zeitung, 14th May 2014, article about the "Poetic Voices Africa" poetry festival in Cologne.

Black Music Renaissance 3 goes BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Every year in February, Black History Month is celebrated in numerous countries, with events focussed on Black culture and history. The WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN is also taking part, with various events that make Black culture, history and current topics visible. In February 2017, we are organizing the four-part BLACK MUSIC RENAISSANCE, in cooperation with the award-winning pianist Kelvin Sholar, for the third time. Starting on the 3rd of February 2017, we will be presenting classical and unique musical styles from the African diaspora in the Americas and Eurasia: hiphop, blues, work songs, jazz, reggae, soul, rock, Romanian tango, African Latino dance and Detroit literature.
