Trio Benares

For many decades, there has been a strong attraction between Indian classical music and jazz ¬– after all, improvisation is a central component of both musical styles.
Founded in 2014, Trio Benares continues this strong historical tradition of encounter. As part of a musical family that harks back seven generations, Deobrat Mishra has gained a prominent place as a sitar player among the musicians of his generation. With his 22-year-old nephew Prashant Mishra, a rising start of the Indian tabla scene, Deobrat Mishra has created a perfect symbiosis.
Roger Hanschel, a master of his instrument and definitely one of the most extravagant saxophonists of the contemporary music scene, unites his warm, multifaceted sound with the sensuous and brilliant sound of the sitar, his rhythmic finesse finding its match in the virtuosity of Prashant Mishra’s tabla playing. Trio Benares creates the perfect unit. It is as though the three were just waiting to find each other all this time.
