"Wär ich nicht arm, wärst Du nicht reich"

Sunday 05.11.2017 Admission: 2:30 PM | Seminar Room 1

Admission: €14 / €7

Organizer: Hans-Beimler-Chor

The Hans Beimler Choir was founded in Berlin-Neukölln in 1972. Our non-professional choir brings together people of all ages, genders, social classes and nationalities from Berliners living (mostly) in Neukölln.

In our over 40 years of existence we have established a very diverse repertoire through our participation in campaigns for international solidarity and the initiative “Artists for Peace”, performing at renters’ and environmental movements events as well as at memorial events for the victims of Fascism.

At the centre of our singing are songs from the labour movement – which were recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2014. Since 2007, Johannes C. Gall has been the choir director and arranges many pieces that are rarely performed (from Beethoven to Eisler, Kreisler to Rotmo) for our mixed choir.

The increasingly unequal distribution of wealth in society is a socially explosive problem that is becoming increasingly serious. Our two concerts, with the title “Wär ich nicht arm, wärst du nicht reich”, focus on this topic.

The Hans-Beimler Choir is a politically engaged choir that uses artistic means to convey its messages: songs on a direct, or ironic level, framed by spoken texts and video imagery. In this way, we make use of both traditional songs from the labour movement as well as popular and contemporary pieces from a variety of genres.
