Klezmer in Neukölln? Yes, and right here!

Jewish life has come back to Berlin, bringing with it lots of young, international Klezmer musicians who have established themselves in the cultural scene and for the most part centre their daily lives around the neighbourhood of Neukölln.
In addition to the regular Neukölln Klezmer Sessions and the Klezmer ball Tantshoys Neukölln, in 2017 there will be the second edition of the Shtetl Neukölln festival.

This festival is not about an historical, formal understanding of traditional Yiddish dance music - the festival aims at presenting the openness and ability of this music to integrate itself into the world around it.
That’s why the programme also includes a wide range of workshops on the topics of Klezmer dance, Yiddish songs and instrumental music, alongside concerts, sessions and a Klezmer ball.
Come to one event or stay for the whole day! The Yiddish instrumental, vocal and dance workshops are open to people from all musical backgrounds, at all levels. Learn from the best Yiddish musicians in Europe at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN in Neukölln.

Tickets for workshops and concerts are available as a four-day SHTETL PASS for €90 / €65 (students) or as a day pass for €45 during the festival at the festival box office in the foyer.

Individual tickets for evening concerts, the Shtetl Gala and Tantshoys can be purchased at the evening box office for €15 / €10 (concession) / €5 (Berlin Pass).

Concert |

FRIDAY | 15.12.2017 | 19.00 | Foyer

The Jewish holiday Shabes (also called Shabbes, Shabbat, the Sabbath etc.) marks the end of each week. It is a time to leave behind all worries, a time to rest.

On Shabes it is customary to get together with family and friends; to light candles, sing songs, dance, eat and drink.

Join us Friday night December 15 as we welcome Shabes together with song, dance, wine and snacks. The entrance is free.

Concert | Yiddish-punk borderlands

FRIDAY | 15.12.2017 | 20.00 | Saal

The Painted Bird, Berlin's original radical bandits of the Yiddish-punk borderlands, have been troubling the Klezmer scene since 2005.

After five years since their last release, they are returning with The Butcher's Share, their fifth and fiercest studio album on Oriente Musik. T

hese original and adapted polyglot songs masterfully navigate the dichotomy between the hopeful and the despairing, the explosive and the corrosive.

Featuring a killer live line-up (Christian Dawid, Michael Tuttle, Hampus Melin, and more), these are revolutionary anthems for the apocalypse.

Concert | East meeting the North

FRIDAY | 15.12.2017 | 21.30 | Club

Mames Babegenush is the East meeting the North. Strong Scandinavian roots merges with the vibrant dance music of Eastern Europe, from the ambience of Nordic pine trees to lively weddings in Romania the music of Mames Babegenush gives a sense of both melancholy and ecstatic joy.

Formed in Copenhagen in 2004 the six-piece ensemble quickly dazzled audiences as well as critics with a fresh sound and musical gumption. The group spent years to perfect the styles of traditional Jewish and Eastern European folk music and have always insisted on leaving their personal mark on their music.

Their 5th album, Mames Babegenush With Strings, is out via German Galileo Music vinyl/CD/digital platforms.

The festival is organised by Tănase & Gebirtig e.V. and the team at Neukölln Klezmer Sessions in cooperation with the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN and takes place on the premises of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN.

The facilities of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN are accessible to wheelchair users. Please call us in advance on +49 (0)30 60 97 70-0 to ensure proper access support.
